Ant McPartlin reveals he almost DIED following two year secret painkiller addiction in first interview since leaving rehab
The TV favourite checked himself into a facility in June to battle his demons once and for all, with many fans and stars rallying round the popular Britain’s Got Talent host following the news.
And now, for the first time since leaving rehab on Friday, Declan Donnelly’s best pal has opened up about what happened prior to entering the facility – including an incident which saw him be rushed to hospital following a "crazy" binge on drugs.
Ant, 41, told The Sun on Sunday: "I was at the point where anything — prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs — I would take.
"And take them with alcohol, which is ridiculous. The doctors told me, ‘You could have killed yourself’. "
Ant also revealed how he binged on tramadol, morphine and alcohol – which led him to be rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
He added: "It was five in the morning and I was screaming in pain so I rang Lisa. She was upstairs because I was living in the living room because I couldn’t get around.
"I said, ‘You’re going to have to call me an ambulance. I’m in a bad way’. I was insane. It sends you crazy. It was to the point of hearing things, seeing things in the garden and still the pain was getting worse.
"The ambulance came and took me to Chelsea and Westminster. I was depressed through the whole thing because I was in pain and immobile."
Now, the popular host is clean of all drugs – except Paracetamol – for the first time in three years. But back then, it was Ant’s knee that would continue to cause him pain – so much so that he would rely on incredibly strong pain killers to get through the day.
"Initially I was prescribed co-codamol, codeine, the normal stuff you would get, and then a lot of opium-based stuff. As a general rule, anything that is opium-based can be addictive," he added.
