Get Ready To Turn Off Bravo, Because Netflix Is Adding 20 Unscripted Shows Next Year

Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix, and Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, pose for photographs in Seoul, South Korea on June 30.
“Stranger Things,” the buzz around “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” and oh, the fact that you can now watch Netflix anywhere without internet, it’s safe to say the streaming service is having a pretty good year.

Lucky for viewers, Netflix’s plan for 2017 is as ambitious as ever. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix Content Chief Ted Sarandos revealed Monday that the company would spend $6 billion on new programming next year, resulting in 1,000 hours of original programming and 20 unscripted shows.

While speaking to investors at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, Sarandos talked about Netflix’s upcoming competition show and a “new model” for the service. He also denied the entertainment giant would bid on live-sports streaming (for now, at least).

The content chief couldn’t resist taking a slight dig at competitor Amazon, the company behind “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” In his mind, Amazon has essentially been spending money but not “gaining much traction.” The e-commerce giant did recently incorporate HBO and Cinemax programming —which Netflix currently doesn’t offer — for Prime members for an additional fee.

“Maybe it sells Prime memberships or other things I’m not privy to, but right now it just looks like they’re spending a lot of money,” Sarandos said.
