Bella Hadid talks Dior skincare, Gigi & handling the pressure of fame
Bella Hadid looked achingly cool in double denim at the launch of the Dior Pump 'N' Volume Mascara
Who inspires you in terms of beauty and make-up?
All of the 90s supermodels - the most beautiful girls in the world. Make-up has always been super-sensual to me… Always bringing out the cheekbones, around the eyes and a good brow - that’s always what I looked up to.
What have your mother and sister taught you about beauty?
We’ve always kept it really simple - My mum always taught me more about the skin. My sister is all about contouring and my mum would always have such beautiful lashes. We’re all kind of teaching each other.
Were you a girly girl or tomboy?
I was definitely more of a tomboy growing up - I grew up being at the barn from 6am ‘til 8pm and so make-up was never a big deal.
You have a great sense of style, who would you say is your style icon?
I mean, Rihanna - I think she’s all of our style icons!
Bella chatted to TV presenter Laura Jackson at Selfridges on Thursday evening
What is your morning regime routine, what do you do to get ready?
I always love to wash my face and put on a good moisturiser. My face is so dry, especially in New York. And I love the Dior Hydra Life Fresh Jelly Mask.
What products could you not live without?
Apply after you’ve washed your face and put moisturiser on, the Dior Hydra Life Fresh Jelly Mask is amazing. It really plumps up your skin and tightens everything up so that you’re ready to put your face on. There’s also a face wash (Dior Lotion to Foam Fresh Cleanser) that takes your make-up off perfectly. And any kind of Dior moisturiser is great as it’s really light. It’s so easy with Dior because the products are all perfect.
What’s it like working with your sister? And how do you support each other?
She’s my best friend I love her to death. It’s so cool to be able to call her and not talk about work. She’s been through everything I’m going through now because she’s been in the business for a little bit longer than I have. She’s amazing – I love her.
How does your style differ from Gigi’s?
Growing up, Gigi was always wearing a lot of colour, and a lot of florals, you know? She was definitely our Malibu girl. I was always wearing leather and dark things, and I think I am still like that. Red is my favourite colour and the only pop of colour you will see from me.
Skincare secrets: Bella swears by Dior's Hydra Life Fresh Jelly Mask
Do you and Gigi share clothes?
We share shoes but she gets mad at me when I steal her things. She will deny until the death of her that she has my stuff, but then I realise I probably left it at her house and then feel bad for yelling at her about it!
Work seems pretty busy at the moment, how do you mentally prepare for a challenging day?
I have a meditation music list that helps me sleep.
Your success has come very quickly. How do you prepare for all the pressure you are going through?
I try to keep the people around me who have known me since I was a kid because they don’t care about who I am or what I do. They’re just like “don’t be a bitch today.” I try not to take things too personally and make more time for myself.
How do you keep a fresh face on a long haul flight?
I love to use sheet masks. I probably look like a psycho but I put one on and fall asleep - I cover my head though so that nobody gets scared! I also like to have some kind of moisturising spray with me.
Clean sweep: Bella loves to cleanse her face with Dior's Hydra Life Lotion to Foam Fresh Cleanser
When you want to escape work where do you go and what do you do?
Anywhere with my family as that’s what keeps me calm and makes me happy. We just bought a farm, and it’s the kind of the place where we’re going to be able to feel relaxed and just be together. We’re going to get some more horses and start riding again – I’m excited about that!
What would be your dream holiday?
I just went to a beach in Jamaica with my girlfriends for a day! I hope next time I can stay for longer though.
What’s in your suitcase?
The Dior Pump ‘N’ Volume Mascara and a bathing suit. And probably some kind of sound system for music.
