Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon visits Childline in Manchester as soap character Bethany Platt is amidst shocking grooming storyline with older man
Lucy’s character, Bethany Platt, 16, currently believes she is in a loving relationship with Nathan Curtis, 35, after he manipulated her, while encouraging her to sleep with his friend Neil.
Bethany was raped by Neil in harrowing scenes on the soap last month, and her ordeal is far from over.
As the shocking storyline develops, viewers have been gripped to Coronation Street, as Bethany continues to be involved in emotional scenes.
So on Thursday, Lucy paid visit to NSPCC’s Childline, who held 2,340 counselling sessions about Child Sexual Exploitation in 2015/16.
Lucy said: "It’s been quite overwhelming hearing how many children use Childline and how counsellors are able to help, just by listening in some cases.
"When you’re young and vulnerable, like Bethany is, it can feel like you have nowhere to turn so its crucial Childline is there for them."
Lucy explained that she hopes her current storyline will encourage victims to speak out about what they’re going through.
The 21 year old continued: "Talking to counsellors has really made it hit home that there are real-life Bethanys out there who need help.
"I hope by tackling such an important issue on Coronation Street we can help raise awareness and encourage victims to speak out."
Childline’s Service Manager, Anna Krala added: "We are so grateful to Lucy for taking the time to come and see the vital work we do at Childline.
