Roger Ailes a polarizing figure in suburban New York

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell called Ailes "a man of genuine compassion."
The fight proved unnecessary, as a news story revealed that county policy prohibited naming a building for someone until five years after his or her death.
By 2016, the all-Republican county legislature changed the local law, and named the facility for Ailes. But then came allegations of sexual misconduct by Fox News commentator Gretchen Carlson, and a renewed fight to remove his name, with singer-songwriter Dar Williams among those speaking out.
In August, after Ailes had been fired from Fox News over those allegations, the legislature was prepared to approve the gift and allow Ailes' non-profit to serve as construction manager of the public project, which would give him the right to select the contractors.
Faced with public outcry, the legislature balked at voting for the agreement, and Ailes withdrew the $500,000 gift. Four months later, Ailes sold the weeklies.
