More than 50 people were injured when the tram came off the tracks and flipped on to its side during rush hour on Wednesday morning.

Tom Dale, 20, was a school friend of Mr Chinnery and was travelling on the tram when the accident took place.

Describing the victim he said: "He was just a friendly, genuine lad, did no harm to nobody really. No one deserves for this to happen to them."

Friends of Mr Chinnery, who is believed to be a Crystal Palace fan, posted tributes on social media.

Tom Curtis wrote on Twitter: "RIP Mate taken too soon."

Forensics teams are expected to continue working at the site until at least Thursday evening and identifying the dead may be a "complex and lengthy process", British Transport Police said.

The tram was travelling from New Addington to Wimbledon via Croydon when the accident happened at 6.10am.

Eyewitnesses described scenes in the wake of the crash as "total carnage" after the two-carriage tram tipped over in heavy rain next to an underpass.

Survivors said they recalled the tram failing to brake in the usual place when it came to a bend after speeding up.

Royal Navy veteran and father-of-seven Kevin Snow, 57, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was on his way to work in central London when the tram overturned.

He said: "Usually as you come out the tunnel you feel the brakes, but I didn't seem to at all. I thought, he should be braking in a minute.

"The next thing I knew we were on our side. Everyone was screaming and shouting, a lot of people were injured - lots couldn't move."

He said the tram slid for between eight and 10 seconds before coming to a halt.

Martin Bamford, 30, from Croydon, said he recalled the tram "speeding up" and added: "Everyone just literally went flying."

Speaking outside Croydon University Hospital, where he is being treated for fractured or broken ribs, he said people were screaming and there was "blood everywhere".

He said: "There was a woman that was on top of me ...I don't think she made it at all. She wasn't responsive. There was blood everywhere."
