Gunman suspected in officers' ambush found dead in Pa.
A police officer was fatally shot and another wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance call Nov. 10, 2016, in Canonsburg, Pa.
One police officer was fatally shot and another wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance call Thursday in the western Pennsylvania town of Canonsburg, authorities said.
The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and another victim's body was also found, multiple media outlets were reporting.
A SWAT team and dozens of officers swarmed the home in Canonsburg after the shooting at about 3:30 a.m. local time, State Police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said.
Before the shooter's death was confirmed, some homes were evacuated and schools in the area were closed.
"Please stay in your homes if you are not being evacuated," Bondarenka said.
Bondarenka told reporters that a protection-from-abuse order had been in effect at the home. Officers were immediately met with gunfire when they arrived at the scene, Bondarenka said.
Washington County Coroner Tim Warco identified the dead police officer as Scott Leslie Bashioum, 52.
"The other officer has been flown to a Pittsburgh hospital," Warco said. "Obviously it's all very sketchy at this point. It's still an active scene."
The coroner's office confirmed to USA TODAY that the bodies of a man and a woman were found. Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
Keith Jacob told the Post-Gazette he lives two doors down from where the officers were shot. He said he awoke to the sound of gunfire.
"That’s what woke me up. Then I thought I heard someone say ‘My partner’s down’, " he said.
Canonsburg, a borough of less than 10,000 people about 20 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, has a police force of about 15 officers, according to the town's website.
